I wouldn't read too much into her viewing figures in the 70s and 80s when there were only three or four channels, people only really had the choice of two channels for their saturday night entertainment.
You could have stuck Fat Sam on prime time ITV talking tactics and he would've got millions of viewers.

The enduring shows/programmes of that era where incidentally all elsewhere or outside those key high level viewing figure time slots
Facts are it was the time slot on BBC1 or ITV that attracted 'viewers' or more accurately, activated on switches

For what she did she was marvelous the woman could front a show that is all i am saying.
Most of the people who would have watched Cilla would probably be our parents aunts uncles etc I do not see them all as inferior beings just because they enjoyed a bit of light entertainment.
Many would argue especially the older generation that the true Moronocracy are the people who watch Keith Lemon The inbetweeners and many other crude shows which I do not agree with but again taste comes into play.

The best TV is and has always been David Attenborough programmes for me, and it has been so since I was a child, the man is masterful and teaches us about animals ecology and the environment we are all surrounded by.
Cilla Black was someone who simply lightened the mood but she knew how to do it we have proof of this because her viewing figures said so.
Anyone who stays at the top for over 15 years in the TV game whatever anyone thinks knows how to do their job it is absolutely ridiculous to suggest otherwise.
Taste is something else she may not have been what you would have liked in a presenter but does that mean she was bad at her job no it does not.
